Support Coordination Explained: Your Guide to Navigating the NDIS

A good support coordinator can make your NDIS plan work for you. Here is what they do, how to choose one, and what to expect.

What Is Support Coordination?

Support coordination is one of the most valuable yet misunderstood parts of the NDIS. Put simply, a support coordinator helps you understand, implement, and get the most from your NDIS plan. They are the bridge between your goals and the services that can help you achieve them.

Three Levels Explained

There are three levels of support coordination. Support Connection helps you understand your plan and find initial providers. Coordination of Supports is more hands-on — your coordinator actively manages multiple providers, resolves issues, and helps you build skills. Specialist Support Coordination is for participants with complex needs and involves higher-level clinical or crisis management.

Choosing a Good Coordinator

A good support coordinator should know the local provider landscape, understand the NDIS price guide, and communicate clearly. They should return calls promptly, keep accurate records, and treat you with respect. If your coordinator is hard to reach, dismissive, or pushy about certain providers, that is a red flag.

When to Change Coordinators

You do not have to stay with a coordinator who is not working for you. Changing support coordinators is allowed, and many participants do so at plan review time. Your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or planner can help you request a new one.

How It Is Funded

Support coordination is funded separately in your plan under Capacity Building. It is not meant to last forever — the goal is to build your skills so you can eventually manage your own supports independently.
