Capacity Building: Skills for a More Independent Life

Capacity Building supports help you develop practical skills, find employment, and gain confidence to live the life you want.

Investing in Long-Term Growth

Capacity Building is one of the most powerful parts of an NDIS plan. Unlike Core Supports, which fund the help you need day-to-day, Capacity Building invests in your long-term growth. It is designed to help you learn new skills, build confidence, and reduce your reliance on funded supports over time.

Understanding the Sub-Categories

There are several sub-categories within Capacity Building. Improved Daily Living covers therapy and assessments that help you do everyday tasks more easily. Finding and Keeping a Job supports employment-related skills, training, and workplace readiness. Improved Relationships helps you develop positive behaviour and social skills. Improved Living Arrangements assists you to find and maintain suitable housing.

Common Underused Supports

Many participants underuse their Capacity Building budget because they do not fully understand what it covers. For example, you might be able to use it for cooking classes, travel training, budgeting workshops, or social skills groups — all of which build independence.

Linking to Your Goals

The key is to link every Capacity Building support to a goal in your plan. If your goal is to live more independently, then daily living skills training is a clear fit. If your goal is to find work, then employment supports make sense. Your support coordinator can help you map this out.
