Check Your Eligibility

Before applying, confirm you meet the NDIS access requirements. You need to be under 65, an Australian resident, and have a permanent disability that significantly impacts your daily life. If you are unsure, the NDIS Access Checklist on the official NDIS website is a great starting point.

Top Tips

  • Gather any existing medical or specialist reports
  • Write down how your disability affects daily tasks
  • Think about what supports would help you most

Make an Access Request

You can make an Access Request by calling the NDIS directly at 1800 800 110 or completing the Access Request Form online. You will need supporting evidence from a healthcare professional that confirms your disability and its impact on your life.

Top Tips

  • Contact your GP, psychologist, or therapist for evidence
  • Ask them to focus on functional impact, not just diagnosis
  • Keep copies of everything you submit

Attend Your Planning Meeting

Once approved, an NDIS planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) will contact you for a planning meeting. This is where you share your goals, daily challenges, and the supports you need. Be honest and specific — your plan is built around what you say here.

Top Tips

  • Bring notes about your goals and current supports
  • Invite a family member or advocate if you want support
  • Ask questions if anything is unclear

Receive Your NDIS Plan

Your NDIS plan arrives via the myplace portal or by mail. It outlines your funded supports across categories like Core Supports, Capacity Building, and Capital Supports. Review it carefully — make sure the budgets align with the goals you discussed.

Top Tips

  • Log into myplace to view your plan digitally
  • Check that funding categories match your needs
  • Contact your planner if anything looks incorrect

Choose Your Service Providers

Now it is time to find providers who match your needs. You can choose registered NDIS providers like Better Take Care, or self-manage and engage any provider you prefer. Look for providers with experience in your specific support needs, good reviews, and transparent pricing.

Top Tips

  • Compare providers in your area online
  • Ask about their experience with your disability type
  • Confirm they are registered and charge NDIS price guide rates

Quick Answers

Common Questions

Quick answers to the questions new NDIS participants ask most often.

01

How long does it take to get an NDIS plan?

From making an Access Request to receiving your plan, the process typically takes 6 to 12 weeks. Complex cases may take longer. You can check the status of your application through the myplace portal.

02

Can I change my plan once it is approved?

Yes. If your circumstances change significantly, you can request a plan review at any time. Minor adjustments can often be handled directly with your Local Area Coordinator. Plans are also formally reviewed every 12 months.

03

Do I have to use registered NDIS providers?

Only if your plan is agency-managed. If you self-manage or use a plan manager, you can choose any provider — registered or not. Better Take Care is a registered NDIS provider, so we can work with any plan type.

04

What does Better Take Care help with specifically?

We help with every step after your plan is approved: interpreting your budgets, choosing the right services, matching you with qualified support workers, creating support schedules, and preparing for plan reviews.
