NDIS Transport Support: Getting Where You Need to Go

Transport funding helps you attend appointments, work, and social activities. Here is how it works and how to make the most of it.

Why Transport Matters

Getting from place to place is essential for independence, health, and social connection. The NDIS recognises this through transport funding, which can be used in several different ways depending on your needs and goals.

Support Worker Transport

The most common use of transport funding is paying a support worker to drive you. This might be to medical appointments, therapy sessions, work, or social activities. Your worker can use their own vehicle or accompany you in yours.

Public Transport Training

Public transport training is another valuable use of transport funding. If your goal is to travel independently, a support worker can teach you how to read timetables, plan routes, use travel cards, and navigate stations safely. Many participants start with full support and gradually reduce it as skills grow.

Taxi and Rideshare Subsidies

Taxi and rideshare subsidies are available in some states for people with disability. The NDIS may fund the gap between the standard fare and what you actually pay. Check with your plan manager or support coordinator about what is available in your area.

Vehicle Modifications

Vehicle modifications can also be funded if you or a family member drives. This includes things like hand controls, wheelchair lifts, and swivel seats. These modifications require an assessment from an occupational therapist.

Evidence for Planners

To get the right level of transport funding, you need to show the planner how often you travel, where you go, and why. Keep a travel diary for a few weeks before your plan review — it is powerful evidence.
